How can you say it wasn't a life or death scenario!? The second a hose fails like that it becomes a potentially deadly scenario, the engineer should have shut the line down. Once the line was shut down that section of hose then should be replaced whether it was training or not. Even in a real scenario you should take the minute or two in order to ensure it is safe. Remember: you didn't cause the emergency so DO NOT become part of it!
