A total of 120,000 people will emigrate from Ireland this year and next, according to the ESRI.

A separate survey, by Eurobarometer, reveals that more than one fifth of the population is considering a move abroad to get work.

The ESRI think-tank is also warning of an urgent need to deal with a massive jump in long-term unemployment.

In its latest quarterly report it is urging the Government to hold its nerve on drastic cutbacks.

Dr. Alan Barrett from the Institute said that he expects the outflow of people from Ireland to increase "quite significantly."

"We think already probably in the year gone by something like 70,000 have left, again possibly another 50,000 next year".

  • The idiocy of American immigration policy slams the door shut on European immigrants such as the Irish who built this country in favor of those from almost any other place in the globe - mostly for "family reunification". Its been this way since 1965 and its sickening. Glad to see Australia and NZ aren't so stupid as to shut you out. They're gain is our loss.

  • @waaeaa Council housing allocation and even the likes of affordable housing (remember that?) goes on a points basis. So many points for living in the area where you want your house, so many if you're married and have kids. I got turned down for an affordable house despite working in the public sector because I had no kids and was single! Way to go! I got a nicer house after TG.

  • @Iamthegreatification They didn't come unaccompanied. Plenty of scumbags in every nationality, don't put it all on Irish people.

  • @brokendoberman Don't stay in Ireland (or come here if you're somewhere else) if you find Irish people that objectionable.

  • @EvilKorbinDallas Don't be so sure. If the EU goes down the pan, the social welfare will go with it so you'll have to take over somewhere else. And the "stupid white people" had the faith in God before your ancestors did.

  • @mikeistomo They're not begging for your help. And yep, we know your country's problems right now.

  • Eire today gone tomorrow.
