Being in the TV repair business, naturally I going to see the worst of TVS, so perhaps I'm wrong to conclude that most LCD TVs don't seem to last over four years, but this is the impression I'm getting.
Compared to the older cathode ray tube TVs it's surprising the short life that LCD and Plasma TVs last.
Just last week I saw an older style Curtis Mathes CRT TV that was 25 years old and still working okay. It did need a simple repair a few years ago but otherwise the picture still looked pretty good. Just for the record the model was A2634RP.

I thought it would be interesting to hear from others. Does anyone here have an LCD TV that made it past 4 years?

  • 12 months and 3 days then nothing turns on , just a slight blue flash of the screen then nothing . Standy light remains on but thats it .

  • @ozzycriss Can you share the make and model number?

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs Model E32Z10A - AU , Soniq 32" HD LED TV

  • @ozzycriss Thanks!

  • I have a Sylvania Model LD320SS8 TV/DVD combo. I have owned it for 4 years. When I turn on the TV, there is no picture and the green power light just blinks and goes back to the red standby light. I put the TV in the shop and they repaired the power supply. It has been out of the shop for 8 months and it is doing the same thing. I have an electronics degree and I really would rather fix it myself. Where is a good website to purchase power supply boards?

  • @emerald2diamond You can't necessarily assume your power supply is bad. The inverter board as well as other boards can shut your TV down.

The safest place to buy a replacement board is from the manufacture. I discovered some of the businesses which offer salvaged boards are selling bad boards.

  • I bought a Dynex 40 inch and it stopped working after 3 months. It turns on and off again with a blank screen, so i checked the capacitors and none were bulging. I also have my grandma's old Zenith Space Command TV from the 80s and it still works like when she had it back in the day.

  • We have a Sharp Aquos LC-32D40U, purchased from Sears as a demo model in the Fall of 2007. We paid just over 600 dollars for it and no manual but we did get the remote. In about a year it started developing this strange problem, streaks down one side of the screen, not lines but more of as stain.... "running" down the screen between the screen itself and the overlay. I loosened the back screws and it stopped. Must be LCD fluid leaking out when hot! Now the clarity of the screen is blurred!

  • My HANNS.G HC174D monitor started having problems powering on after 2 years of purchase. Although recently I was able to replace the bulging caps from the power board. There is still a slight problem with the lighting where as soon as it's turned on the screen looks a little dark but after a few minutes or seconds it goes right back to normal lighting.

  • Hi Dave,

The MAIN reason why these units don't last as much as the earlier (ie.) Sony CRT TV's is mainly because of component quality control. The ones that esp. come from China are notorious for this. Unfortunately most of these units, even with Japanese brand names use Chinese made components. (Sigh!) anything to increase profit - at the expense of creating more junk for the planet.
