(June 17, 2009 - Insidermedicine) From the Netherlands - According to research in the Annals of Internal Medicine, stents do not seem to be beneficial for renal artery stenosis. In a study of 140 patients with atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis, researchers found that stents had no obvious effect on the progression of impaired renal function. In addition, two patients died of procedure-related causes within 30 days of placement.
Stent Placement in Patients With Atherosclerotic Renal Artery Stenosis and Impaired Renal Function
A Randomized Trial
Background: Few data support the efficacy and safety of renal artery stenting in patients with atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS) and impaired renal function.
Objective: To determine the efficacy and safety of stent placement in patients with ARAS and impaired renal function.
In conclusion, this is the first trial comparing stent placement plus medication with medication only in patients with impaired renal function and ARAS. We found no statistically significant difference in progression of renal failure over 2 years in the 2 groups, although our findings are compatible with both efficacy and harm and are therefore inconclusive. A considerable number of stent-related complications occurred, including 2 procedure related deaths. Thus, our findings favor a conservative therapeutic approach to patients with ARAS, focused on cardiovascular risk factor management without stenting.

Every case is different but I would get on the Internet and do LOTS of research. My mother's story is at medvictims. com. I did four years of daily research for her lawsuit. A good place to see the actual stent studies is at pubmed. gov. Don't let the doctors freak you out. Remember they all stand to gain by what they are telling you. Some lie. Some are in denial. Some only study what they want to hear. Get several 2nd opinions.

My 17 year old daughter is being tested for this next week. What on earth are we going to do if this doesn't work or is too risky?!
