Rectos are fantastic sounding, heavy, great looking and expensive. Many would argue that they're the undisputed king of the hill when it comes to bottom heavy grunt rock. I remember back in about '92 or thereabouts when Soundgarden brought them to Australia and let loose at the Big Day Out. More like the Big Amp Out.

I couldn't afford a Recto even if I wanted one. Many just don't have that sort of money or couldn't be bothered lugging one around even if they could afford it. So for us, there is the very capable Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series U.S. Steel, a tribute to the mighty steel plated megalith. The U.S. Steel does a good job of delivering the ferocity of the real thing. Many an audience would be hard pressed to tell the difference I feel, unless they had to lug the real thing up the back stairs..

Check it out. I play it here with a Burny SG loaded with moderate output pickups (Mick Brierley Hand Wound Vintage/Moderns).

  • is it true, that this pedal SOUNDS a little bit like the mesa boogie recto?

  • @Marcel3540 Well it certainly doesn't weigh as much.

  • For crunchy power chords - which do you prefer : US Steel or Tech 21 California with drive cranked?

  • @GeorgeJSmiley Probably the US Steel although given a choice I would always veer towards the Blonde. :)

  • Great demo sir. What a change from all the other dudes trying to talk and be funny. Thank you for the music and the sounds.

  • Hi :)

I was thinking about getting the blonde along with the us steel. You know, one for the bluesy overdrive and awesom clean tones and the other for metal and realy tight gain stuff. I understan you took a liking to the blonde so I am pretty set for that one, but what would you choose for metal, leads and just tight heavy metal rythm?

    Hope you can answer :)

    I really appreciate your movies!

    Thanks a bunch!! :)

  • going into guitar amp = speaker emulation off

Going straight into P.A. System or recording mixer, etc.= speaker emulation on

    Its that simple folks!

  • SOUNDS LIKE MESA BOOGIE

  • Hi Brett, i always enjoy your tests and i have purchased a lot of sansamp stuff on your "advice" .. In this trial i am a little puzzled about the sound being very much close to a distorted sound without speaker emulator.. Are you sure that the speaker emulation button was correctly engaged? I tell this because i tried one in a shop and played a bit trying to find a good sound before discovering that speaker emulation was off! Despite other pedals i was initially cheated because it not sounded t

  • dr boogie ???

  • Burgerman.....thanks for the great videos!!! I use them as a reference library. Since tuning into your video world, I have purchased MANY tech 21 pedals and have not been dissapointed in any of them or their tonal characteristics. You make YouTube time well spent and your no talk "hands on" approach works the best. Please notify us when you start your tour of the USA. God bless and keep you safe.

  • @SaberBE What i meant was that you could run this to the clean channel on your amp. I'm not sure how the speaker simulation would react though
