It does need wifi, but gesiwuj is wrong, it does have storage, and can store music. I don't think it can store video, but it can play youtube from the wifi. Also, just plug in an iPod or thumbdrive loaded with music, and Chumby will play it for you. It does have storage of its own for music, but there's not much, something like 64 megs total.
It's not meant to replace a computer. It's supposed to just run internet widgets such as email and weather. You're not really browsing the internet or anything, this doesn't even have a web browser...
You're being too ignorant yourself, and honestly, I wouldn't buy my child a notebook until they reached highschool, buying them something that fragile at that young of an age is askingg quite a bit. Desktop for a while hun.
Research more before you start hoing on like you do.
it is not a computer, it is an information box. You cannot do hardly anything on it like you can a computer, however i have one and i is great because you can program what streaming music you want to listen to when you wake up, and many other things. It is basically a relly advanced alarmclock "computer alarmclock" sounds dumb but i find it very useful, youre right though this does match what a computer can do. but it would be very impractical to have a laptop on your beside table to wake you

where's the fookin keyboard!? this is just a dumb "widget"-based touchscreen device for the dumbed-down generation of touch-screen morons.
will anyone even know what a real computer is in 5 years time? this is a device for kids, created to ween them off of keyboards and any INPUT device which enable them to PRODUCE and actually create.
dont get this for you child unless you want him to growup thick in the head. just buy him a laptop!
Just so ya know.. use the tip of your fingernail for dragging or tapping, Chumby isn't like the iPhone, it wants precise tapping.

I was disappointed to find out (from the Chumby website) that this product is currently only available in the US.

It needs a WiFi internet connection I think, and I also don't think it can store data apart from widgets.
