Bass drum, keyboard, trumpet! Like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins!
The instruments used are:
1) kick drum (cable from left heel)
2) snare drum (cable from right heel)
3) splash cymbal (cable from left upper arm)
4) Steinberger guitar
5) Midi keyboard
6) harmonica
7) kazoo
8) pocket trumpet
9) vocals (mic mounted on harmonica stand)
10) bicycle horn played with chin
All sounds where mixed through a battery operated mixer (hidden behind the keyboard) and sent to the PA through a mono wireless unit.
Songs included "Blue Suede Shoes," "If You're Happy And You Know It Clap Your Hands," and "Can't Buy Me Love."
This was my first "drum on the back" style one-man-band rig. Actually, it's about the 3rd in a series of rigs I built, but the first that I promoted to agents and started gigging with. Earlier rigs where all prototypes.
This rig was really fun to play and looked pretty good. It got me a lot of paying gigs around Japan. But it was just too damn heavy and hurt my back too much, so I stopped performing with it. I eventually rebuilt it into a sit down version, but later destroyed the whole kit out of frustration.
This video was filmed in 2003 at River Walk shopping center in Kyushu, Japan. It's the only footage I have performing on this kit, although I did 20 or 30 shows with this rig over the one year I used it. If anybody in Japan has footage of me performing on this rig, please contact me!
