TodaysNetworkNews: 11 February 2010 - UNTV: United Nations, New York - - Following the Security Council briefing on the DPRK (Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea) Sanctions Committee today, Japans ambassador Yukio Takasu, was asked by the reporters about his expectations regarding United Nation (UN) Special Envoy B. Lynn Pascoes current visit to DPRK.

He expressed hope that Pascoe would reaffirm the call for North Korea to return to the six-party talks in order to achieve denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Takasu also stressed that there was no other way to solve the nuclear issue than through diplomatic means.
Pascoe and his team will be in Pyongyang until Friday, and would then leave for Beijing, Seoul and Tokyo. Today Pascoe had delivered a verbal message from the Secretary-General, as well as a gift, in accordance with standard diplomatic protocol. The gift delivered was a leather-bound copy of the UN Charter in all six official UN languages.
Asked about the recent reports on the Thai cargo that was bound for Iran, he said that it needs to be, very clear and strict in terms of the allegations of member states. He also noted the difference between DPRK and Irans sanctions regimes saying that sanctions against DPRK are stricter than against Iran.
Takasu added that there is no confirmation yet that cargos destiny was Iran. That is a matter of Sanctions Committee with the experts help have to investigate.
The Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1718 (2006) was established on 14 October 2006 to oversee the relevant sanctions against DPRK.
The sanctions include an arms embargo, a nuclear, ballistic missiles and other weapons of mass destruction programs-related embargo; a ban on the export of luxury goods to the DPRK; and individual targeted sanctions a travel ban and/or an assets freeze on designated persons and entities. ....................................................................................
