An Improvisation/Postlude on the "Te Deum." Since Daniel Roth seems to be a rising YouTube star, I thought it would be fun to hear him when he was titulaire at Sacré Coeur. Check out the picture of him from 1980 (& excuse the fuzziness -- it was scanned from an old album cover).

The Sacré Coeur organ is a IV/78/109 Cavaillé-Coll from 1898 -- the largest C-C ever built "from the ground up." (St. Sulpice & Notre Dame were re-builds). It was built originally for a baronial chateau in the French coastal town of Ilbarritz. It was installed in Sacré Coeur in 1913, & inagurated in 1919 by, among others, Widor & Dupré.

Sacré Coeur must be, if internet photos are a gauge, the most photographed building in Paris. At least the exterior. The interior, on the other hand, is almost never photographed, and once you go inside, you can understand why. It's got a sterile, pseudo-Byzantine sort of weirdness that doesn't inspire photographs.

  • THis cavaille-coll doesn't quite get the attention it deserves. In this improvisation, the slightly out of tune reeds, combined with the typically thunderous pedal bombarde chorus makes this organ sound frightening and powerful.

  • This organ need to be featured more. It's typical cavaille-coll, with a thunderous bombarde chorus on the pedals, powerful reeds and lush foundations.

  • This is from a documentary recording made just before the organ's restoration, hence the rugged state of tuning. Roth omitted the mixtures from all his registrations on this album, as they were even worse out of tune that the rest of the organ!

  • My gosh! Troubling to read all these posts. How can it be that things can go so "wrong?" Well, we'll leave THAT one for others. Regardless of it all, I'm delighted to have the chance to hear this organ, having been fortunate to be in Paris in June of 2009 and see it (albeit from floor level). Would that money existed to preserve, protect and properly enjoy all these wonderful organs! I can only say at this point, THANKS for posting this!

  • Not pretty music, but impressive.

Where is Vincent Price when you need him...

That is an entrance cue if I every heard one.

  • yes i agree it dose need tuning the reeds need that the most but still i very great and mighty pipe organ.

  • It's beacuse they are not allowed to have concerts in Sacre Coeur, which is crazy!

  • Wow, needs tunig!

But together with the dome it makes the sound even more terrifying!

  • That's excellent indeed. It's always a rare treat to hear this instrument, there aren't many good recordings of it lying around. Look at that beard! He looks much more venerable without it.

  • It's true that this organ is relatively unknown. That has to do with a peculiarity of the Sacré-Coeur Basilica: its 24/7 veneration of the Sacrament in silence, except for the services. So, it is nearly impossible to make recordings or give concerts in this church with its beatiful organ.

  • It is interesting how unknown the Sacre Coeur organ is even though its had so many famous organists eg, Daniel Roth, Rolande Falcinelli, Naji Hakim....It is such a shame as it is a great organ.

  • questi organi suonano quasi da soli talmente son belli!
