I was following 531, with bench 4 nights rest, military 3 nights rest (I did legs on other days too). I just have really wide clavicles and I think that had a part to play with my shoulder discomfort with the barbell. It gradually became more irritated over time, despite trying rotator cuff work, tennis ball rolling etc. I suspect dumbbells just allowed my shoulder joint to articulate more freely. I had no issues with barbell bench.

Doing barbell presses for 4 years straight killed my shoulders. The moment I switched to only dumbbell presses for shoulders they healed up within a matter of months. That's just my perspective.
