Initially 2 F-15's from the 102 Fighter Wing that was stationed at Otis ANGB were scrambled after the 2nd plane from Boston dropped off of radar. They patrolled the airspace above and around Ground Zero. AF77-0102 is currently located at the Pacific Coast Air Museum.

@muckletoon not for nothing, but you probably can't see a fighter aircraft once they reach 20-30 thousand feet because their paint schemes camo them and they are pretty small from that distance. You should hear them, but I doubt you'd see them.

They claimed only 2 jet were scrambled but I clearly saw 4 f-15 in a box formation fly over my house in Bergen County.
