I was attracted to this piece by its bizarre title, but it is in fact a very accomplished piece, somewhat in the elegant style of Gottschalk. Edgar H(armon) Sherwood (1845-1919) was a largely self-taught musician who served in the Union Army in the American Civil War before taking up a career as music teacher and composer in New York and Chicago, before settling in Rochester, where this piece was published in 1884. He seems to have written mainly piano music and songs.

  • Lovely. Very American, a little ahead of his time in places I think! A touch of the American 1920s salon to it.

  • @eoghdes18 Thank you. You are right - it is quite forward looking.

  • This is very pretty, just what we need to lighten the mood on a grey January morning.

  • @harryfaber Thank you - I agree!

  • The outcome teaches us that music can't be bought in the 'academic tower': this composer who was "largely self-taught" (as said in your info.) composed a wonderful piece with careful texture and use of registers. Did I hear some traits of the 'Yodel'? Beautiful and no less elegant performance. Thanks for uploading.

  • @wolkowy1 Thank you - you did indeed hear the slight 'yodel' effect - Alpine folk music was a great influence on salon music of the time.
