  • Hey, I think at 3:08 minutes you got things mixed up because you said "you cannot use must to express certainty in the past" but then you go on to say that "you can only use must to express certainty in the past"...? Can you double check this, I think it was just a slip when you were speaking.

  • @sjanosco Great observation Sjanosco and thank you for the comment. Make sure that you understand the differences between "certainty" and the "idea of certainty."

You cannot use "must" in the past to express certainty. You have to use "have to" in the past.

For example: He had to stop, because he was going too fast.

(This example tells us that we are 100% certain that he was obligated to stop)

  • @sjanosco To express the "idea of certainty" we have to use " must" in the past.

For example: He must have been drunk when he was stopped by the police.

( In this example, we only have the "idea".... We are not 100% certain that he was drunk when he was stopped by the police)

So when it is the "idea of certainty" we use must in the past.

When something is "100% certain" we have to use "have to " in the past.

Thank you so much sjanosco, I hope this reply helped

  • Thank you so much! I am so happy that you like it! There will be more coming soon! Good luck!
