It's funny that so many people here are bashing the American political system. Funny thing is, the States of Washington, Idaho and Montana offered to purchase the Seattle-Butte line from the Milwaukee's trustee for scrap value. Hell, the Union Pacific planned to buy the line from them afterwards and rehab it! But the Milwaukee said 'no' and tore it up instead. ><

The Milwaukee Road management should have been dragged out of their headquarters in legirons for the way they allowed this once fine RR to go to hell. No way should they have ever abandoned the Milwaukee's Pacific Coast Extension....that line was extremely valuable, but those management fucks were too dumb to see it. This line should have been part of another merged system...Milw + Rock Island? Milw + Nickel Plate + W&LE + P&WV + Western Maryland = transcon?

Typical corporate MAD MEN of the 1960's managment led to this demise. Same thing happened to the Rock Island, "gee were gonna get merged with the big boys, why put any work into our track". Oh shit!
