Comb & Fluff. Using the comb, we fluff and "stack" the coat as the final preparation before trimming.

  • Unfortunately, Frosty is no longer with us. He certainly was delightful, and I'm glad we have this video to remember him by. It's good to hear that you are brushing your Bichon and he has become good about it. It is so important to stick it out with the brushing/combing so that grooming becomes an important part of how the dog gets attention. Good for you!

  • His owner was taking the video. Frosty wants to get to Daddy! This is why we don't encourage pet owners to hang out while we groom their dogs. We tried to deal with the behavior as best we could. It was a matter of whether to share the video or not. Sometimes I wonder if I should have withheld this video...

  • It can take 4-6 months. ARGHH! Coat transition from puppy to adult coat can be troublesome and challenging in any breed, especially those with combination coats.

  • I think you are referring to the amount of hair. It is a mistake to think that a fluffy coat makes a dog suffer in the heat. Dogs do not experience their hair as we might experience their hair. They do not have sweat glands all over their body, only on the pads of their feet. The dog's coat, especially white hair, acts as insulation against extreme heat and dissipates the heat, preventing overheating. Think of white roof coating!

  • My own two Bichons are bathed weekly. If they go more than 10 days, they have mats and tangles and look terrible. It's a high maintenance breed. My clients are groomed on 2,3, 4 week intervals and are sometimes bathed at home between visits. The most important thing, however, is brushing and combing.

  • There are individual differences in hair growth, but on the average, you can count on approximately 1/4" per month. An inch of hair on a Bichon is a good base. You should have all the hair you would need in 2-3 months. In the show cut, the body of the Bichon is not over an inch. The neck crest is the longest point, sometimes 3-4 inches.
