Amazing KHON footage of the 1983 earthquake illustrates the importance of being self-sufficient: if the roads are destroyed by an EQ, you wont be able to get to the store, so better have your supplies prepared in advance. Auntie Lita visits a favorite nephew to show what should be in the emergency kit. She then visits another family, to dramatically demonstrate the importance of being ready at all times for an earthquake, since earthquakes—like Auntie Lita—always show up without warning. This is part 2 (of 4 parts) of CSAVs 1997 video, Earthquake and Volcano Hazards on the Island of Hawaii, produced with FEMA grant funding. Big Island actors include the inimitable Angie Libadisos Baker, portraying Auntie Lita, who visits her various relatives to make sure they are strengthening their homes against future earthquakes.
