I helped a friend of mine install a 10kw Bergey Excel on a 120' guyed lattice tower in western NY. It was the muddiest job site I have ever been on and this made it really interesting. They had to ferry in the concrete in an excavator bucket because you couldn't get a concrete truck through the mud. Also you could not get a crane in, so this tower and turbine had to be stacked with a gin pole which made it even more fun. I set up my camera when we started and shot most of the project in time lapse. Besides getting rain and wind-ed out one day, the job went pretty smooth. Here I am working on the tower with another friend, while being supported by the best ground crew ever :-)
There are also more still images of this project in our gallery http://windsine.org/gallery/?act=browse&f=home&id=110

  • nice, i wish also that the part of hoisting the turbine components would have been shown. was this left out for legal reasons. bergey company turbines seem nice. your website looks a little outdated. i live just on the bay across from galveston and am considering turbine. i think i will build my own first just to test out capabilities.

  • @cubeloid - No, it was left out because the camera shut off (I did not program enough frames- my fault) It was a long day that day and we basically worked into the dark if I recall. If you want to see that machine being hoisted, I found another clip. Its in my uploads called "Mudjob mainfrafe hoist without a crane" I am the one walking the machine up the tower in this clip.

  • BULLSHIT> Explain how you got the powerhead up there without a crane. This is the most dangerous, fucked up install I have ever seen. Nice how you cut out the part where you did have to lower the entire tower to get the powerhead on, and then, amazingly, after some big puffs of crack, the tower is raised again without the blades on! All this is normally done on the ground!

  • Wow,...i think i might just leave your comment up here. Good for a laugh.

  • @windsine do you guys do it this way for the adrenaline rush?

  • I stand corrected! Very impressive, especially with ground conditions. This must be off-grid? I assume this was really expensive to do this way. Steve, go fuck yourself, your company is toast before long.

  • Then why is that part cut out of the video?

  • Indeed, Windsine....that IS funny!

Zane: Steve Wilke from Bergey Windpower Company here. If you click on the link in the info box to the right of the video, you will be directed to the pic gallery of this installation. This gallery has some great images of the powerhead being lifted, component by component, using the gin pole.

You are an incredibly opinionated and vitriolic person for the tender age of 22, Zane. You might consider a bit of introspection regarding the matter.
