The union is dissolved! Was the headline in Charleston newspapers on December 20th,1860 after South Carolina was the first to exercise her sovereign right to peacefully secede from these united States. The right to secede was a right that was understood by all of the states prior to the War for Southern Independence. This view is affirmed by the constitution and in the principles enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. Most Southerners believed that Self-government is one of the primary rights of Man.

  • "The unbalance of representation in congress"

If anything the slave holding states had excessive representation.

Slaves were counted as 3/5 of a person for that states representation. At the same time the slaves were considered property and not people with rights to vote for that representation.

The slaves should not have been counted as a part of the population with regards to determining that states number of representatives any more than that states number of cattle.

    More revisionist B.S.

  • @Malscotay If you dont like the way the Constitution sttled the issue of representation then you need to look back to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and beyond. Such a formula actually was passed under the Articles of Confederation but was rejected by one State so did not take effect.

There were more northern States than Southern States in the Constitional Convention of 1787 so your beef is with them. Sounds ot me like you are the one spouting revisionist katunga!

  • It happened TODAY 150 years ago! "First South Carolina Nobly made the stand..."

  • @gascv11 Nothing revisionist in my statement, just my opinion.

My comment also had nothing to do with the north or the south, just slave states.

The line from the video about an "unbalance of representation in congress" IS revisionist, more to the point it is a lie. There was no unbalance of representation. Every state followed the same constitutional rules of representation. Nothing in the constitution makes a distinction between the states regarding representation.
