TV9 - "Katta In Sankatta" Special Report Of Katta Subramanya Naidu Hospital Drama - 3/3..................!

Docs feel physiotherapy might suffice, but Katta is insisting on surgery. If operated, he would be in hospital for at least 2 months. He has stayed just 12 days in jail.

Pain in the neck? Yes. And who else but Katta! What we mean is former minister Katta Subramanya Naidu has a pain in the neck.

Though doctors at the government-owned Victoria Hospital had advised that medication and physiotherapy would suffice, Katta is insisting that he be operated on. The VIP ward of Victoria's new block is any day a more attractive proposition than the Parappana Agrahara prison cell. Since the time Katta's bail plea was rejected and he was sent to jail, he has spent just 12 days behind bars, before escaping to the cozy VIP ward of the hospital 19 days ago.

We could give Katta the benefit of doubt; after all at his age — he is around 60 — there could be all sorts of ailments. But till he was sent to Parappana Agrahara by the Lokayukta special court in the KIADB land scam, Katta had been fighting fit: Temple-hopping with former CM B S Yeddyurappa in the latter's time of crisis and attending court hearings.

But after spending 12 days in jail, along with his son Jagadish, (who is in his early 30s, and continues to cool his heels in a solitary cell), Katta had a cardiac complaint. He was taken to Jayadeva Institute of Caridology on August 21 morning but doctors attending on him ruled out any cardiac-related complication and referred him to Victoria Hospital.

The initial diagnosis at Victoria said Katta was suffering from diabetes, neck pain and hypertension. Few days later, the doctors said there was no other major sickness or complications and he was 'fit' for discharge. Then came Ganesha Chaturthi. In spite of his condition, Katta gorged on sweetmeats and other festival goodies, leading to diarrhoea. So that added a few more days of stay in the hospital.

Now, he is complaining of persistent neck pain — cervical spondylitis.

Victoria Hospital's medical superintendent B G Tilak has formed a nine-member team to attend on the former minister.
"The doctors found that Katta's blood pressure and sugar levels were under control. Some medicines and physiotherapy sessions were suggested for the neck pain, but the minister wants a surgery to be done. He says the spondylitis pain is unbearable," said a source in the hospital. The hospital has sent a letter, stating the situation, to Parappana Agrahara to keep the jail authorities in the loop, also appraising them about the likely surgery.

Once the surgery is performed, the former minister would surely continue in the hospital for at least another two months, said the source.

Any surgery on the spine is a complicated procedure which requires constant medical attention, nursing, care and bed rest for around 90 days.

Meanwhile on Friday, the resident medical officer (RMO) of Victoria Hospital Dr Kantharaj Jain briefed the Lokayukta special court about the surgery to be conducted on Katta. The court-room happenings were laced with action as the judge questioned the RMO as why they were delaying the surgery.

The latter told the court that there were lots of fluctuations in his health parameters and he was suffering from diarrhoea.
The judge asked the doctor why did they issue a fitness certificate to Katta a few days ago (Bangalore Mirror had published a report titled 'Katta is fit enough to be released from hospital' on August 28) and why did they not discharge him then.

The RMO replied, "He (Katta) started suffering from diarrhoea."

He added that the surgery will be conducted on Katta in a week's time.
