The process of the forging and crafting of Vinwid, tri layer blade by David DelaGardelle of the MAD Dwarf Workshop.

The awesome bladesmith/blacksmith Ric Furrer showed us how to correctly weld the billet together which was used for the blade.

Check out Ric's site at:
http://doorcountyforgeworks.com/

The blade consists of a tool steel cutting edge core and a wrought iron backing spine which gives the blade its pattern.

A few steps that were made are missing in the shown process, such as:
- tempering the blade
- burning the tang into the handle
- and edge sharpening

But we hope you enjoy this look into the crafting of this blade!

  • I really love your work, but why do you never temper your weapons?

  • @Xiras1985 Um... we temper all of our blades. Just because its not shown in this vid doesn't mean we dont do it. ;) Cant record everything

  • which runes are you using?

  • @FUwogs

Moon Runes, the version of runes used by Tolkien in the Hobbit.

And no, sorry we're not pagans, we're followers of Christ, because we want to experience lasting Joy.

    Just like Tolkien was. :)

  • Do you do this for a living or just a hobby?

  • @Ernblastio living

  • @ajwalters12 - If you really want to get into blacksmithing, you should check out local blacksmithng groups in your area. Nearly every state has at least one and sometimes several. Visit the website of the Artists Blacksmiths Association of North America - ABANA - for a list of affiliated groups near you. There are similar organizations in other countries, too.

  • @MADdwarfWorkshop I see, thanks for the answer ;)

  • Great video! Me and a friend of mine are just jumping into it. We had to convince our parents that we weren't complete idiots and that we knew what we were doing. We even heated some metal to show my friend's dad we could do it. If you have any advice for us we would greatly appreciate it!!

  • love the videos, giving me some ideas of what i could do...if i found a coal supplier
