Flying VFR into a big, busy airport (Class B or C airspace). Join Pilot Kurt Schendel & Instructor Ben McQuillan in the cockpit as they fly VFR from Flying Cloud into Minneaplis International in Kurt's Piper Cherokee 140. MSP is the 12th busiest airport in the world, & Kurt had never flown into a big airport prior to this flight. • Do commercial flights do the same stuff you do. As in plan there taxi route, I thought that ATC simply gives you instructions and you follow them. Please let me know since i am not a real pilot.

  • @pocomedy Good Question. ATC does always issue a thorough taxi clearance. But following it isn't as easy as driving a car. Airports can be confusing & challenging to navigate, particularly big airports for novice pilots. The preparation we talk about is essential & difficult for new pilots, but comes more naturally & with less effort to professional pilots, to avoid ending up in the wrong (potentially dangerous) place on the airport.

  • @InflightMN oh that makes sense thank you

  • @pocomedy IFR pilots don't need clearance into an airspace since they are in contact with ATC already, while a VFR has to call ATC before entering Class B airspace. An example is at KLAX, a small private VFR plane departs el monte for example and they want to enter KLAX airspace, they have to call ATC and get clearance before entering KLAX airspace

  • To help me judge the time to start my flare (for any width runway) I pick at spot on the runway which is about 150-200 feet prior to my aim point. For runway 35, it looks like you are aiming at the number 35, so I would start my round out/flare just after crossing the threshold ... then look toward the far end of the runway and let the aircraft settle toward the surface until it looks like I'm driving down a multiple lane expressway in an suv for my height clues.

  • good video. I liked the emphasis on studying the airport diagram and anticipating the various possibilities for turning off the active upon landing. Prior preparation is a real good tip from this instructor!
