Heavy Rains Create Mudslides and Mine Flooding in China

Torrential rains have triggered massive mudslide damage in southwest China. State television says four people are dead and 53 others missing.

A thousand-foot stretch of a highway in Kangding County, Sichuan Province was submerged in water following a mudslide nearby. The same mudslide blocked a river and formed a one-hundred-million-cubic-foot barrier lake.

The flood stranded at least 97 local residents. State media says they've now been moved to a safer area downstream.

Meanwhile, in China's northeastern Heilongjiang province, 23 miners are still trapped in a flooded coalmine. Days of heavy rain caused a 30-foot cave-in near the coal mine and flooded the shaft. One lucky miner felt sick and left the shaft before the accident happened.

China's mines are considered the deadliest in the world. More than 3,000 people died in coal mining accidents in 2008 alone.
