I love the old Gas helicopters. The Hirobo Shuttle was first introduced in August, 1985.
Since then Hirobo has released other types namely Shuttle X, XX, Z, ZX, Z Ts, ZXX, RG. Now Hirobo still produces the Shuttle series names Shuttle plus and Shuttle Sceadu.

The Shuttle became known as one of the first ARF Helicopters. (Almost ready to Fly) The Head was typical for heli's at the time with individual 'flapping' blades and a tail rotor driven by a belt. Unusual though, was that it came with an auto rotation clutch as standard equipment thus giving the Shuttle aerobatic properties in the right hands.
Mike Mas was famous for flying this helicopter inverted.

Because of these extras though, it was expensive when compared to other manufacturers.
Shuttle Z's without any accessories were 250, radio was 600, engine was 100, and a Motorized gyro was 175-250.

Now over 25 years later the 'Shuttle is still one of the best entry level nitro helicopters on the market.
By today's standards, this old Shuttle was not much of a 3D helicopter, but with some mods, loops, rolls, and inverted flight could be accomplished.

It's heavy so it becomes much smoother than any of my 1 lb electrics. My shuttle weighs 6.9 lbs for comparison.

Being that I'm getting older, I just love to watch my helicopter fly nice and smooth around the sky. It is a real treat, especially since the wind does not bother these bigger machines too much and it feels good.

Specs:
L with rotor: 1,320 mm
Width at skid: 220 mm
Height: 395 mm
Rotor Dia: 1,100 mm
Weight: 2,300 g

I hope you enjoy this bit of history before piezo gyros, mixing radios for 3 servo swash plates, Lipos and 2.4 GHz.

  • @hunter3333333 Thanks kindly. Many people ask for my 9 Helicopter tips (link is in my Bio) so I had to throw a few into this video.Wwe learned without crutches back when we were inventing all this stuff. Now helis are a walk in the park. I hope the folks get a glimpse of nostalgia, cause this heli was one of the best of the day. And this was before Windows and cell phones... Haha Thanks again.

  • Mr NightFlyer, I have never commented on your videos but have watched them over the last 3 years or so while learning to fly helis. I must say you are a great guy and your videos have been very helpful to me. Thanks again to all you guys for your guidance and inspiration. I tip my hat :)

  • Has anybody ever told you that you sound like the voice of Garfield?

  • sir it is necessarily to use governor for nitro heli?

  • I love your philosophy about crashes!

Your video has convinced me that I need some form of smoke emitter on my electric helicopters!

BTW - enjoyed your experimentation with single blade flight. Did you achieve more economical flying with single blade on a DH 9100?

  • I taught myself to fly on an old Shuttle Z with a rate gyro. Brings back some good (and not so good) memories LOL.

  • Nicely done....SEMPER FI

  • cool guy

  • your badass...much respect or fixing that up

  • You should do radio or media dudley smooth voice (lose the Chicaaago accent)

  • Those of us that have been flying copters for a short period of time with gyros and the latest technology take it for granted most of the time and don't really understand how difficult it was to fly many years ago. By the way did I see a little video reversal at the end when you landed? Thanks for the videos.

  • You are awesome man!!! Really great video. And that was good advice regarding Beetles and Porsches :)
