Thanks for the reply. Yes I looked into the 7805 regulator and was concerned about the heat and lack of efficiency. I found a switching buck type regulator ($15) that is 90% efficient at the required current draw. I will also try a low wattage power inverter as they are inexpensive. My concern with both devices is having a clean low noise power output. Also, with the inventor, I will be starting with 12 volts and autos provide about 13.8 volts. I keep researching and post my results on my page.

Nice project! I see you are powering your Foscam using the original adaptor and a power inverter. I am researching how to power the camera with just battery power. I suspect the camera needs a clean and rock steady 5 volts so I would have to use some some sort of voltage regulator with the battery. Any ideas?

@tronics666 your options for remote power from a batter are to hook the battery up to a cheap inverter and use the included foscam plug, or build a power regulator sing a 7805 5V voltage regulator, and a rew resistors (and a heat sink!) Careful with this approach... I built my own voltage regulator for a 12V battery and caught one of my components on fire. Just take your time, be careful and do your research :)
