수능(national scholastic achievement examination for the college entrance)을 며칠 앞두고 대구 팔공산 갓바위에는 자식들을 위해 힘겹게 돌계단을 오르는 우리의 어머니들을 볼 수 있다. 거친 숨을 내뱉으며, 시큰거리는 무릎을 짚어가며 오르는 단 한가지 이유는 그저 자식들이 잘 되기만을 바라는 소박한 마음때문이다.

Gatbawi is a Buddhist statue at the top of the 850 meters high rough Palgongsan. It was made in the Unified Silla Kingdom era and is well known with the name of Gatbawi Buddha (Stone Hat Buddha). It sits 4m tall, and the hat is a 15cm thick flat stone on his head. It is reputed to be a miraculous Buddha stone, which makes a response to prayers if the prayer prays for it with his or her whole heart.
