I find that when I read a sentence by Proust, I look away from the page and daydream, savoring the image... a piece of chocolate in my day... and only when I have time to truly indulge can I ever finish a page or two. -- I agree with MitchelWeaver, the audio-reading is almost frothy and goes by too fast to "get it". Only the firsthand reading is worth it.
it is just a extract it is thus difficult to judge the writing. When i started to read him,i was 16 i thought that by the time i finished a sentence, i had forgotten the principal clause , the main verb, added to the fact he was exploring things i was not ready to read... it was puzzling. I only took pleasure as an adult, when i was old enougn.i then stopped fighting with his never ending syntax. I wonder how the english translators manage to render it .
What I meant by "conversational" is not that he writes like a person talks, but that he writes clearly, intimately, and honestly. His writing, while poetic and preternaturally intelligent, is not flowery or showy, nor is it difficult to comprehend. This narrator sounds like he's reciting poetry to children.
Proust is a master who requires at least in french a certain maturity , but once you have penetrated this ocean language , you can never be the same. it transforms you for your lifetime... His style only for it...
i dont know how it sounds in english , but the term "conversational" does not fit for french...within its extroardinary poetic power, his style contains, a hint of delicious irony. The refinement of language and the great mythic and nature descriptions contrasts with the ridiculous aspect of human attempts. He among maining things depicts human psycholgy with a unique precision... its a huge piece , you could read it 80 times you would still discover new things.
Great to hear these extracts from the final volume, 'Time Regained'. Neville Jason's reading is fine, despite the negative comment and low star rating; it's the piano in the background that irritates.
It seems to me, and no doubt to a few others who have thoroughly enjoyed this short annimation, MitchelWeaver, that your remarks concerning the beautiful narration would be far more suitably applied to your own opinion of it.
This is terrible, actually. Although Proust has quite a reputation as a pretentious, over-complex, writer's writer, his tone is, in fact, straightforward and conversational. This Neville Jason fellow is trying way, way too hard; he's unbearable.

There is not enough Marcel Proust on YouTube.
