In April of 2009, a large wildfire in South Carolina destryed 70 homes in the Barefoot Resort at North Myrtle Beach. The fires were spead in the resort by pine straw mulch around the homes, which ignited, melted the soffets, and fire spread into the attics.
Fire codes in the Carolinas now mandate pine straw set-backs from the foundations of common buildings. This is a side-by-side fire ignition test with Textraw synthetic pine straw, which is an acceptable substitute for natural straw mulch.
