Tribal Superstars

Thank goodness for the Jarawa, whose independence and hostility to outsiders (until recently) has saved their virgin rainforest territory from destruction. This is why they are tribal superstars.

Their neighbours, the Sentinelese, have successfully staved off any attempt to 'befriend' them and settle on their island by showering their visitors with a hail of arrows. This seems to be an excellent strategy and I would advise them to keep it up as long as they can. They do not need anything from us.

The neighbouring Onge tribe, on the other hand, have been beset by western diseases since the Government attempted to 'settle' them in permanent houses and made them dependent on food handouts. As well as disease, cutting the Onge off from their own, self sufficient, way of life has had disastrous results. 'Progress' and misplaced 'charity' are dangerous indeed.

Let the Jarawa and the Sentinelese be! Is it too much for governments to bear that pockets of genuine freedom and alternative - and far more 'human' - approaches to living still exist on this planet?

The Jarawa and Sentinelese do not need our help, our influence, our religion, our form of society, our diseases, our concept of wealth, our nuclear families, our science, or our pity. They have survived for 60,000 years on their islands and have evolved a perfectly balanced lifestyle which caters for their human needs in arguably a superior way to ours.

Isn't their world 'real'? Unfortunately bringing them into the real world would mean instant decimation of their population. And for the survivors it would be exchanging their independent life and culture for (at best) becoming a racial minority of India's rural poor, or ending up dependent on government handouts and kept in a 'breeding population' rather like zoo animals, like the neighbouring Onge tribe. Check out videos of the Onge and just compare their quality of life to the Jarawa.

What they deserve is to decide for themselves how to live, and enjoy their own way of life. I doubt you know very much about the Jarawa way of life, or indeed average Indian living standards, in order to be so very sure about what is best for the Jarawa.

I do not see them as 'in poverty' because they are outside 'our' wonderful system which divides the world into the haves and have-nots.

And the Jarawa are NOT 'your people' - if you want to trace back when their ancestors left Africa, you will probably have to go back further than any other non-African people.

The rest of us are concerned that a valid and very rich and efficient culture is not destroyed by invasion and cultural erosion.

They don't NEED to "progress", as their quality of life is probably better than yours or mine.

They need to be left alone and free to live as they've already chosen.
