Happy Yom Kippur everyone. If you're fasting; good luck. :)

Nick’s POV.
How can an unknown number be calling me? My hands start to tremble.
“Nick, answer the phone, honey,” Mom presses. I press the green button and I swallow.
“Hello?” I ask in a shaky voice.
“Nick Jonas… Nice to speak to you… Saw your brother and my ex-girlfriend earlier… And oh, lookie here… Guess who’s in front of me? Care to say hi, bitch?” a guy’s voice laughs menacingly.
“It’s Alex,” Brooke hisses. My eyes grow wide.
“Nick?” I hear someone sob.
“Oh, my God. Summer! Are you okay? Sweetie, talk to me. Are you alright?” I cry.
“Nick… I need you to listen to me okay?” Summer sobs. Everyone crowds around me and I clutch my phone.
“Summer, tell me if you’re alright,” I insist.
“I’m okay, Nick. I’m—” She gets cut off and I hear a slap. I then hear Summer whimper and I gasp.
“Summer!” I yell.
“She’s fine, Nick,” another voice assures me. I look at Brooke.
“That’s Drew…” she whispers. I nod.
“Drew, what happened to Summer?” I ask, keeping my voice as level as possible. I hear another smack, another cry and my heart rips in two.
“Alex… Please, Nick, help her. Please help he—” Drew starts to plead quietly, but then I hear a crunch and a pained cry. That can’t be good. Tears pool in my eyes.
“Get the fuck away from the phone, Parker,” I hear Alex hiss.
“Nick…” Summer’s voice again.
“I’m here, Summer. What’s going on?” I plead desperately.
“That was me letting you know Summer is still very much alive. Little Joy is asleep. What I want from you, is to give me what was on my letter. And yes, I know asking for a person is a little out there, but that’s what I want,” Alex chuckles. I look at my Mom and Dad and they look back guiltily. I get handed the piece of paper and see Brooke’s name in big bold red letters.
“You can have the money, Alex.”
“Fine. Double the amount and I’ll drop my other request,” Alex offers. My eyes grow wide when I double the amount of money on the paper in my head. I look at Mom and she nods.
“Okay. When and where?” I gulp.
“I’ll contact you again when I’m ready. Until then, you might want to sit tight.” He laughs, then disconnects the line. I drop my phone and turn to my family. I seem to have lost the power to speak, because when I open my mouth, nothing comes out. Kevin puts his arms around me and I hug him back.
“Thanks,” I whisper.
“I love you, bro…” Kevin replies. Tears well up in my eyes and I pull away. Brooke has the piece of paper in her hands and is trembling furiously. Joe is trying to calm her down, but I can imagine that won’t work. If I saw my name on someone’s ransom request, I’d probably freak out too. Everyone around me starts chattering and Dad gets out his phone. I assume that’s to call the police. I walk over to a couch and sit down. I take a deep breath. Summer was being roughed up by Alex, that much was clear. But she is also alive; that makes me feel a little bit better. I then think about what Drew said. He wasn’t being like Alex was. He was pleading me to help Summer… What if Drew isn’t the bad guy anymore? No, Nick, that’s crazy… But… what if that’s true? I shake my head to rid it of all thoughts. We’re going to give Alex the money and soon Summer will be back in my arms again. Oh how I long to have her in my arms again; how I long to kiss her… I sigh and look at Kevin and Molly. They’re sitting on one of the beds, Indian style and talking to each other. Despite the situation, they’re smiling. And that makes me happy. Well, as happy as I could be at a time like this. The way Kevin looks at Molly… He loves her so much… I then look at Joe and Brooke on the other bed. Joe is leaning against the wall and Brooke is sitting in his lap, leaning against his chest. Her eyes are closed and Joe’s resting his chin on her head. He’s stroking her back softly. He looks down at her and then it hits me. He has almost the same look in his eyes that Kevin does. Joe loves Brooke. Of course Joe loves Brooke. I feel stupid for not seeing this earlier. I smile to myself. I get up and walk over to the table where my parents and Big Rob are sitting. I sit down on one of the chairs and fold my arms over each other.
“What can I do to help?” I ask eagerly.
“Nicholas, honey, it’s okay. We can handle it,” Mom assures me and she touches my cheek. I shake my head.
“No, I want to help…” I repeat.
