haha, I brought my laptop to a repair shop so they could diagnose the problem and they said it'll cost 115 for the inverter and 125 for an hour of labor. I saw I could get the inverter on eBay for 15 bucks and obviously if I do it myself it'll be free. I haven't actually switched it yet but thanks for the vid.

i have a sony vaio lap top that goes black screen sometimes. I have to angle it to get the screen normal. Now it is going white screen and i have to shake or angle badly to get screen to look normal. What could be the cause of this? what would u suggest i try fixing? I do not think there has been any liquids spilled on it, i know it has been dropped once or twice. The lap top is only 1 year old. Please let me know what I can do to fix it i would appreciate it very much :)

Thank you for this video - lots of helpful tips.
Dropped my laptop, and over the course of a week, the screen progressively became darker, until one side lost all backlight, and then the other. Bought an inverter on ebay after watching this, and fitting it went very smoothly (except for one absolutely tiny screw holding the interter in place; nice one Dell!).
Thank you.
Thank you very much! I will get a new inverter on ebay and try to fix it myself. You and your video is a big help to everyone

Save the link to the video so that you can come back to it when you get your replacement part. Also try to comment when you come back with a response whether it was successful or not.

Hi @sandiego11,
honestly there is a tool but it costs $60 I believe. Not worth it for one repair.
In 90% of the cases its the inverter, and if the laptop is older it will be pretty cheap, so not to high of a risk if it is not. Prices range from $5-40 depending on how new the laptop is. (newer ones are using LED... forget the inverter)
If you have a similar laptop you can test the inverter by replacing it with it.
If it burned out over night, I would say go with the inverter. If you dropped it...

why do you have to remove the battery???

@davetheflave1055
Both the battery and power supply give (supply) power to the laptop EVEN IF THE LAPTOP IS OFF.
Once you discharge the static built up in your laptop you can remove the various components needing attention. Usually you are unaware of the static discharge. It can discharge with the simple touch of your finger on any of the grounding of the laptop (usually the larger metal components)
Having power supplied to a component while removing it can surge other components.
God Bless
