Milton and I had nothing on our walls on Waller Street in San Francisco. I guess we were too cheap to buy art. I started painting to have something to put up on the walls. At first, Milton insisted that I did not know what I was doing and he didn't want me to put anything up. Over a period of time, he came to appreciate my art I think. Initially, most of my paintings were of black males. At one point, I had enough paintings of black males to do a show with that as a "theme." After I started doing shows and sold some paintings, it started feeling more like work and I lost interest for the most part. I did do a few of the women in my life, Darlene, Donna and my friend Kathleen.
