RARE P-51 Mustang / P-38 Lightning Formation Flying (part 1)

Incredible. EXTREMELY RARE situation. I was lucky enough to go up flying with my buddy Steve in his P-51 Mustang and by extreme luck we were allowed to fly in formation with his dad in a P-38 Lightning. Steve says only a tiny handful of nonpilots have ever done this kind of thing, and I caught some of it on camera.

Million thanks to the Darkest Hour dudes for letting me set this epic flight to their epic tune.

I've never seen the cockpit of the P-51 up close. I thought it was a single seat airplane but there you are. Did they modify it for a passenger?

@chupposity I'm actually sitting on the radiator cover. nice and warm. It was modified into a second seat.

it was recorded on a photo camera, not a video camera, so the noise was so loud it was just static... nothing pretty like when we were actually up there, i was pretty disappointed

@sketchmeister Totally agree there man but Viper's response explains a lot. Nothing like the sound of a roaring Merlin engine at 'full-chat'. Pity viper didn't have a better camera with him to capture that sound as well as visial experience. Very rare indeed that he got a P51-D and a P-38 in the same frame never mind fly formation! Now that is pretty special.

Was that a weekend hop? I used to live in Eastvale and volunteered at POF as a docent trainee and detailer for just over a year. Used to see these planes fly over often, may have seen your flight.

@ryanthepoopyhero Bro, this beauty of a bird is nearly as fast as lightning. This is the bird that won the Western Front of WW2. This is the P38 Mustang.

I would have much preferred the sound of the p-51's merlin over the music.
