Huw is the first in the family to ever attend school in John Ford's 5 Academy award winning Welsh coal mining epic drama from 1941.

  • I love that the older bully refuses to make a back so that the English schoolmaster can beat his classmate. Very Welsh. :D

  • I love this movie! The fact that it beat Citizen Kane for the Best Picture Oscar is testament to the brilliance of this film.

  • its an embarrassing film, typical hollywood bullshit

  • I know there are so many mistakes about the Welsh, so many Irish actors used-- except for Dai Bando -- but it's such a touching movie if you don't know a thing about Wales. It made me a fan of Welsh music forever!!

  • My grandmother was born in Senghenydd famed for the great pit disater where she lost most of the men in her family. She read the book and saw the film and laughed till she cried. `Roast meat on a sunday! wild rabbit once in a while maybe`.

This film was as true to Welsh life as `The Quiet Man` was to Irish.

Another inslt to working class people.

The director should have been jailed.

  • @forsytherob It's the idiot buffoonery that the characters are shown as exhibiting that I object to. They are made to look like fools by the director. Furthermore, the book makes it quite clear that the characters all spoke Welsh and many of them had little or no understanding of English - it was the 19 century. So the effect starts to seem all too familiar - the English ridiculing the Welsh again.

  • @ilkinond If there is a Welsh director around as good as Ford was they are certainly the best kept secret. Also, this is a story which should be told in many languages, but let's remind ourselves that only a fraction of Welsh people themselves understand Welsh.

  • And the child has mercy where the so-called adult had none. What a SWINE!

  • @9abcdefgz I was never canned, but Roald Dahl was, in school. That was in the 1930s. Have you never seen the great movie If?

  • @9abcdefgz Oh really? I was never hit by a teacher in public or in private. . . but in school . . .

  • Its sad when at the end the dads going to his night shift in the coal mines and the bells go off and somethings wrong under there.

  • @34RiverStone No, hardly any of them sound Welsh...
