That sounded like my Toshiba Satellite from 2001...nice machine...1 giga of RAM and 1.5 procesor...but a crappy DVD Rom...like yours.
Try the alternate version, put your laptot vertically and see what happens...it worked for me. LOL.
I sold it a week ago...now i have a new one...the only problem with UBUNTU is the crappy broadcom wireless...and the OPERA browser for linux that is just crap.
One little fault for the 8.10 version is battery consumption, lasts just a little more than Vista.

POsible falla del hardware, consulta los drivers de la tarjeta de video y que estes utilizando una vesion final de ubuntu
