Instructions for: Little Darling Toddler-Youth Crochet Shell Cap

Skill Level - Easy

Abbreviations
HDC - Half Double Crochet
CH - Chain
SL ST - Slip Stitch
MC - Magic Circle
SH - Shell

Definition
( total stitches ) - This is the amount of stitches you will have on each round.
Shell for this pattern will be: 2 HDC, CH 1, 2 HDC

Materials
Size H/5 mm crochet hook
4 ply yarn
Tapestry Needle
Caron 4-ply yarn

This cap will fit an approximate 22-24 inch head. Since it is made with a G hook, you can make the cap larger with a size H, I/5.5mm or J hook.

Work a magic circle MC. Chain 3 and join as an alternative to the magic circle.

Round 1: Chain 1, Work 12 SC through the magic loop or chain. Do not join and work in a continual round. (12 SC total) You may want to get a yarn marker to mark the first stitch of each round.

Round 2: Work 2 SC in the top of the first stitch. Work 2 SC in each stitch around. (24 SC total)

Round 3: Work 1 SC in each stitch around. (24 SC total)

Round 4: *Work 1 SC in the next stitch, work 2 SC in the next stitch. Continue around from * for a total of 36 SC. (36 SC total)

Round 5: *Work 1 SC in each of the next 2 stitches, work 2 SC in the next stitch. Continue around from * for a total of 48 SC. (48 SC total)

Round 6: Work 1 SC in each stitch around. (48 SC total)

Round 7: *Work 1 SC in each of the next 2 stitches, work 2 SC in the next stitch. Continue around from * for a total of 64 SC. (64 SC total)

Round 8-9: 1 SC in each single crochet around.

Round 10: *Work 1 SC in each of the next 7 stitches, work 2 SC in the next stitch. Continue around from * for a total of 72 SC. (72 SC total)

Round 11: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. (72 SC total) Skip 1 stitch and slip stitch in the next to even off the round.

Round 12: Work a shell in the first stitch (shell = 2 HDC, CH 1, 2 HDC in the same space) skip 3 stitches, *work a shell in the next stitch, Continue around from *. (18 Shell Stitches Total)

Round 13-21 : Slip stitch over to the chain 1 of the next shell. Chain 1, pull up, Work 2 HDC, Ch 1, 2 HDC in the chain 1 space of the previous shell. * Work a shell in the center chain of of the next shell. Continue around from *, join with the beginning shell. (18 Shells total)

  • When I'm not crocheting, I'm chasing around my 4 kiddos: Bradley (4), Molly (2.5), Lily (18 months), and Karly (3 months). I am also going to school for nursing! :) What do you do in your free time? How long would it take you to make this hat if you weren't recording? When I want to make the hat smaller, if I take out one of the increasing rounds how much smaller will the hat be (I'm using the toddler darling hat pattern and would like to make the hat fit sizes 0-3 months.
