Asteroid 2012 DA14 Close Approach

2012 DA14 is an approximately 40 meter diameter asteroid that will make a close approach to Earth in early 2013. Contrary to some reports on the web, there is no danger of it hitting us during this encounter. This visualization shows the trajectory of the asteroid as computed by JPL's HORIZONS ephemeris service. As more observations of the 2012 DA14 are made, the trajectory may be revised.

So in other words on February 15th an asteroid that could have killed all life on Earth passed by us and I was at school doing classwork...seems legit.

The planets orbit approxomately on the ecliptic, but the former planet Pluto has an orbit which is tilted quite significantly off of it. Small objects like asteroid and comets (especially comets) can orbit on any plane really. For example, if you look up the orbit of famous comets like Hale Bopp, you'll see comet orbits often come in from the "top" or "bottom" at a wierd angle.

How come the asteroid is coming from South to North? Isn't everything in the solar system orbiting in the ecliptic plane, at the same level with the p[anets?
