Venezuela's cancer-stricken President, Hugo Chavez, has been shown smiling from his hospital bed - in the first photos released of the leader in months.

The pictures were presented by the government on national television, amid widepread speculation about Chavez's condition.

Al Jazeera's Andy Gallacher reports from Caracas.
