  • I remember the bridge plaque said 1978 on it, but me and my friend took both of them off when we were like ten years old to keep. Don't ask me why, but we were some adventurous little kids. I may be able to find it in my basement somewhere. Even with that year, those photos of it seem older than 1978. Not sure why a plaque with that year would be on it, because 1978 seems more like the tail-end of this bridge's time in use.

  • It may be likely that the structure was modified or rebuilt around 1978 while the former Monon was under L&N control.

  • This is about milepost Q23.7 or so just south of the south end of the yard. I'm not sure when CSX finally pulled out of South Hammond for good. I know they switched a few industries there until maybe 1990 or 1991.

  • I could be wrong but I want to say it was around 1994 or so. I can remember CSX equipment sitting around near 173rd St around that time. But i'm just guessing...

  • Is this off of Lyman? I only know of the bridge to the West of Sohl. I didn't know there was another to the South.

  • It's at the far south end of Lyman, off 173rd St, almost underneath 80/94. There is easy access to it but if we have had a spell of wet weather, I dont advise driving in too far unless you have 4x4...it gets pretty soft at the south end of the yard.

  • Man, hats off for shooting this while walking across that bridge! I would've been shaking in my boots...

  • 1985 was the last time it was used.

  • great and very informative

  • There were no steel mills or refineries along the Little Calumet River, Grand Calumet , yes. The water in the Little Cal is runoff from streams and ditches from Hammond, Munster, Dyer, Schererville and Highland.

  • my old haunt. I recently went back to see the site of the old monon/erie station. even found a couple of old railroad spikes for keepsakes. cool. j

  • Hey, the monon railroad historic technical society has a great website with more information on this bridge

  • I will let you know what it says if I ever find that plaque. If the bridge is going like I hear, I guess that I don't feel so bad now for taking it! The year on it was definitely 1977 or 1978. It did have some other writing on it, so I'll see if I can find it to see.
