can a salty live in fresh?

No, generally not. There are some exceptions though. Some kinds of animals are adapted for it, such as the salmon, who swim from their freshwater spawning grounds out to the sea. There are other kinds of fish that can do this, too. This survival trait is called osmoregulation. But a saltwater animal will generally die if placed in a freshwater environment, just as we would die if we drank nothing but salt water.

He gets played with every day for a few hours. You're right - without company and active play, in a closed environment octopods do get bored and depressed. The marine biologist who cared for this particular one recounted the story of one octopus who got so depressed that he gnawed off all his tentacles.
This guy got a lot of attention, thankfully. :)
