I have never found a paid editor that is only near a good as emacs, but that might be up to personal preferences.

Free Software does not encourage you to give up anything for the sake of the community. The choice is this: getting the features of your unfree programm and giving up your freedom or using software that lets you keep your freedom, sometimes at the cost of some features. In short: Not for the "sake of community" but for your own freedom. You are not required to be altruistic at all.

And you still think about "Nature" like it is a person, even when you begin otherwise. There is no purpose of life and also no "should" from nature, at least from a scientific perspective unless you assume "Nature" to be something like a person or life being made with purpose by someone. The evolutionary aspects of homosexuality are a lot more complex then simply "to reproduce or not to reproduce" and there are some very good theories that explain this very common phenomenon.
