Statement:
Sy Gresser believes that art celebrates human existence on a spiritual level and transcends the ideas of religion- any religion as well as the ideas of race.? He feels that his sculpture have a universality of line and form mixed with what he calls, " impossible juxtapositions." Of his work he is fond of saying, " when I look at a stone if I capture some human warmth and sense of meaning, I feel I have been successful. That is all I ask" However, with regards to his most recent series entitled "Hominids" and "Tribal Faces", he has more to say. "These sculptures comprise a faith in image, a sense of belonging to all conscious matter that began long before our measurements of time.As image, tracings of humanoid form exist throughout the works, some easily visible, some more dependent on the imagination. They are not meant to convey beauty or race in the formal aesthetic perception, as much as they are meant to convey a shared heritage of who we were and who we have become through a literal invasion of relationships; of finding correspondences throughout the interchange that occur when we see others and thus ourselves and even more so the reverse of what happens when we become aware of the tangibles that exist throughout human continuity. The impact of these stone carvings is the structure that has come to define the extensions of my having been in the world of now."
