SEE BELOW FOR TECH NOTE ON G4 IMACS....

After digging my way through a number of Macs the day before (see linked video below), I'm upgrading one more machine. This time it's swapping out the RAM buried deep inside a G4 iMac.

Since many people have asked:
700MHz or 800MHz iMacs take PC133 RAM, max of 512MB in each slot, 1GB total. 1GHz G4 iMacs or faster take PC 2100 or PC2700 and (even though Apple never approved it) can handle 1GB max in each slot, for a total of 2GB. Apple never approved it because 1GB RAM modules were not available during the production lifetime of these models. But the 1GHz or faster G4 iMacs can and do take up to a total of 2GB of RAM.

  • It's called thermal paste. Or thermal grease. Or thermal compound. Goes by a bunch of names. There's a wikipedia article on it. A quick search and I found it for $3 to $5 on ebay.

And 10.1? Really? I'd put at least 10.2 on it, if not 10.4. But you can probably find IE and Netscape for it out there. IE 5.1 was the last version for the Mac, I think, and version 7.2 comes to mind for Netscape. Good luck!

  • Hi Please answer me this So this means I could upgrade my G4 800MHZ 1GB RAM TO 2 GB RAM???

  • @MrNickynick444 Sorry, no. Under 1GHz and over 1GHz they use different types of RAM. The iMac I'm working on here is 1.25GHz and can go to 2GB of RAM. Your 800MHz unit maxes out at 1GB, so you're at the limit, the processor can't handle any more...

  • "!It´s Me".....What a great guy

  • @gunnarMyTube But it was me. Still is. If a subscriber hears that, they think, "Yes. Yes, it is him." If someone new to my videos hears it, they simply glance up to the top of my page and think, "Oh, that's who he is." Simple enough, I would think...

  • ok so i found this computer in my basement, and turn it on and theres a black screen and no login screen. i wanna fix it but i dont know how what do i do? you seem smart so i thought id ask you

  • @likestoramble I'm guessing it's a Mac you're talking about. Power it up and press down on these 4 keys: Command, Option, P, and R. Keep holding until you hear the startup chime 3 times the release. It might just start up normally. If the screen lights up with no desktop but gives you a symbol of some kind, tell me what it is, and we can go from there. Email me at the address on my channel page.
