Dream Theater - Learning to Live (Full Version), in Markthalle, Hamburg, Germany 9 April 1993

Lyrics :

There was no time for pain
No energy for anger
The sightlessness of hatred slips away
Walking through winter streets alone
He stops and takes a breath
With confidence and self control

I look at the world and see no understanding
I'm waiting to find some sense of strength
I'm begging you from the bottom of my heart to show me understanding

I need to live life
Like some people never will
So find me kindness
Find me beauty
Find me truth
When temptation brings me to my knees
And I lay here drained of strength
Show me kindness
Show me beauty
Show me truth

The ways that your heart sounds makes all the difference
It's what decides if you'll endure the pain that we all feel
The way that your heart beats makes all the difference
In learning to live
Here before me is my soul
I'm learning to live
I won't give up
Till I've no more to give

Listening to the city
Whispering its violence
I set out watching from above
The 90's bring new questions
New solutions to be found
I fell in love to be let down

Once again we dance in the crowd
At times a step away
From a common fear that's all spread out
It won't listen to what you say
Once you're touched and you stand alone
To face the bitter fight
Once I reached for love
And now I reach for life

Another chance to lift my life
A freedom sensation in my heart
To ride the wings of dreams into changing horizons
It brings inner peace within my mind,

As I'm lifted from where I've split my life
I hear an innocent voice
I hear kindness, beauty and truth

The way your heart sounds makes all the difference
It's what decides if you'll endure the pain that we all feel
The way your heart beats makes all the difference
In learning to live
Spread before you is your soul
So forever hold the dreams within our hearts
Through nature's inflexible grace
I'm learning to live

  • @IxMAKExUxGOxLOL Actually his vocal chords can never recover fully. Of course he has healed, but he can never be the same after that kind of injury. Ex. A footballplayer that breakes his leg will after a time have a healed leg, but he can never be the same due to being forced to have a break and train it up again. The player can be great again, dont mistaken me. I think James have improved a lot the past years and are now able to sing with his current voice and that we all should appreciate!

  • F*ck JLB... I would put on him Larry King's vocal reach to have Kevin Moore back

  • This is the audio from the "Osaka Samurai" bootleg. But it still kicks ass!

  • @IxMAKExUxGOxLOL Agreed, but i was saying in the old days, like in this video in 1993.I know he's no longer able to sing like that, obiously he's a 50 yearold man.But did a great a job in the last tour i think.

  • @AliothSenator Actually his vocal chords have recovered, the only reason he can't sing like this anymore is because he's gotten kinda old.

  • Man, how I miss Kevin Moore.

And I like how they blend between the album outro and the demo outro, both are great and together they're killer.

  • Im pretty sure Portnoy was influenced by the animal which wouldnt surprise me.

  • @BlackWolfPain I've been into Dream Theater for 6 months now and Im convinced the actual reason James lost some of his strength was pushing way too hard. Food accident my ass, theres versions of ''Pull Me Under'', ''Under a Glass Moon'', ect where he's not only singing with a rasp but even would ADD insane high notes. Sounded great for the audience for sure it couldn't be healthy. He even continued to improvise this way after the ''accdent'' (Lins in the Sand) thats the actual reason I think.

  • They're young, powerful and unite here. Kevin, Mike... And James hitting high belted notes with grit. That was Dream Theater that I loved. They're good now, but James is not the same.

  • James'problem is not his vocal cords... The bitch is, he wrote those vocal lines that neither he can sing perfectly in a real concert. And now that a few years have passed... he's fighting to sing at least 50% of the original studio record, and he's not being able to make it up. James is a man who used to sing in the limit of his skills in every song Dt wrote. That could never have a happy end. But who cares... He'still amazing, very emotional and has a beatiful voice.
