We speak to conductor Richard Hickox about his upcoming performances of Vaughan Williams' semi-staged opera The Pilgrim's Progress with the Philharmonia Orchestra.
I was lucky enough to attend all Richard's RVW symphony series in 2008 - every performance electrifying. Having said that, the highlight was "Pilgrim" at Sadler's Wells. It was one of the great high points for me in over 40 years of music listening - I have known the work for many years on record, but RVW was right - it does belong on the stage. It was overwhelming, sung, played and conducted by musicians who were so obviously involved in a very special act of creation. Rest in peace, Richard.
