"Please be Kind"
Words and Music by Sammy Cahn and Saul Chaplin
Performed by Earl Hines and His Orchestra
Vocal by Ida James (Ida Mae James)
Recorded March 7, 1938, New York

I couldn't find much information on Ida Mae James except that she was a frequent vocalist with the Earl Hines orchestra in the late 1930s. I couldn't find any photos of her but she had been described as a petite woman. This was recorded about a month after the Mildred Bailey version with Red Norvo. Ida's voice does remind me of Mildred's and perhaps a bit like Billie Holliday. She puts an interesting twist on the lyrics where she begins "This is my LAST affair, so please be kind..." All other versions I have heard start with "This is my FIRST affair...."

Personnel:
Earl Hines - piano, director
Freddie Webster, George Dixon, Ray Nance - trumpets
Louis Taylor, Kenneth Stuart, Joe McLewis - trombones
Leroy Harris - clarinet, alto sax
Budd Johnson, William Randall Leon Washington - tenor sax
Claude Roberts - guitar
Quinn Wilson - string bass, arranger
Ida Mae James - vocal

  • There is a video clip of Ida James with Nat King Cole singing'Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" or another of her singing "Close To You"

    This is vintage Ida Thanks!

  • Thanks for the info on Ida. I did't realize she later dropped the "Mae" in her name. An attractive face with that beautiful voice!

  • Ida's sweet voice is perfectly suited for her innocent insistence that this is her "last" affair. ;o)

  • @MusicandDancing4Ever

I am a collector as far as aynything I was able to assemble from YT. I adored her from the moment she sang "Close to you", like many others I am sadden there is so little available of her wonderful talent.

  • @neverknewtillnow Are you a collector of Ida James? I been doing research on her, and I wonder what happened to her.

  • I totally agree with your description of Ida. I have collected anything I could find of hers on YT and was pleased when I found your clip although, I think she sounded better in the 40's.

    Enjoy your site very much.
