is the house on fire? Sure is an awful lot of smoke!
-
@BillWeekly - Barney Bigard / Duke Ellington
-
@mcsneedy - Bubber Miley, also, from Duke Ellington's earliest bands. Fletcher Henderson had some great trumpeters, etc., also.

@123must - (Buck/underrated) - True. Shad Collins, Emmett Berry, Joe Thomas could be mentioned, also ... and the legacy of Bix Beiderbecke is undiminished. ... Better, this is a GREAT example of Ben Webster in his later years.

Muchas gracias por compartirlo.

... great, energizing tune.
Cool to see others into jazz as well.

Billy Strayhorn wrote this, not Duke Ellington.

@kingoliver45 ... and I would add Rex Stewart and Emmett Berry

so many great trumpet me you don't hear about if you don't follow it closely - clayton, roy eldridge, oran 'hot lips' page, ray nance, rex stewart, cat anderson, and my all-time favorite, cootie williams. and that's just from two bands in the 30s and 40s.

And check out the understated but brilliant drumming by Jo Jones. I once heard Max Roach say Papa Jo was the greatest of them all. I've never heard anything to contradict that.
Buck Clayton is one of the most underrated trumpet players in the history of jazz and the same happens to Roy Eldridge, the master of Dizzy!

@123must Yes indeed. Buck is one of the greatest. I think Joe Wilder is the most underrated though.
