Very unusual 19th century American violin. The carving is very unusual. The piece is an excerpt from The Sinding Suite (Third Movement) by Christian Sinding.

  • if i had to describe the instrument but not the sound, i'd say it seems like a clay rendering of a violin made by someone who knows nothing of the craft of the luthier...but then i would have to qualify the sound, as this unskilled person has created a sonor masterpiece...brilliant! and well played i might add...

  • this is a very special violin. the maker was considered a genius in both instrument making and sound, and he was apparently very eccentric...there's a story that he set up a booth and made a violin in an hour at the 1900 worlds fair. he made these exagerated violins for some special reason...not all of his violins were like this...its much prettier in person :D

  • strange. i was thinking of getting a custom-made violin that i would've looked exactly like this. i have never seen a violin made almost the exact way i wanted it to be. the modified magini-style holes with the slightly raised edge would've been the finishing touch on my instrument. can i get the maker's name?

    thanks!

  • hi, this violin was made somewhere between 1890 and 1900. i'm sure you could find a modern maker to attempt the design :D

  • wow, this thing looks strange, but sounds wonderful!

  • it's more exotic and beautiful to look at it person...all around an amazing instrument :D

  • Oh my God this is beautiful...Amazing violin...

  • perhaps i misworded my opinion, as i find the violin to be beautiful, an almost taoist rendering of a violin. it appears as though it is made from clay, an imitation of a violin, but the sound belies it's face.

i would be quite pleased to see more of this maker's violins, should you care to share his name!

  • That is just fantastic playing. The violin is amazing too!!!

  • Hahaha, yes! There's a strings shop downtown where I live and the last time I went, I spent over an hour just trying out a bunch of bows that they gave me to choose from. I didn't even end up buying a bow that day, but instead took four different ones home for a trial period. And the time I was picking out a new violin, oh jeez. I think I spent at least two hours trying out the most gorgeous instruments in the cozy little side room them have. Violin shopping is fun. :D
