A slide show I put together for a Music History class.

John Adams' "On the Transmigration of Souls" is meant to be a "memory space" - a place to be free of media influence and opinions - for the 9/11 attacks. I thought this was an effective way of creating that space. So free your mind and watch the 5 ish minute portion of this composition with the addition of pictures.

from wikipedia:
On the Transmigration of Souls (2002): This piece commemorates those who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. It won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Music as well as the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Composition. Adams was the first composer to have earned the latter award three times, having previously won the award for El Dorado (1998) and Nixon in China (1989).

  • This song hits where it hurts

  • Ives would have been proud of this. Musically speaking, subject aside, Adams has really captured the essence of Ives in this piece.

  • Sa me fait peur et sa me fait pensé a se drame qui a frapé les etat unis le 11 septembre

  • Juste Flippant ...

  • Gorgeous and transcendent. About as apolitical as it might be possible to be only a few years after the event. It speaks of loss, all loss, beyond the event. And yes, Ives would be proud, or at least flattered :-)

  • @metalheaddrummer101 which wasn't composed to commemorate those events. the title was tacked on later.

  • We had to listen to this song for my music class, but I say what a beautiful way to give tribute to those we lost on 9/11

  • bone-chilling and yet, beautiful

  • This is very scary.

  • i thought it's "listen"

    but it's "missing"

and this is dedicated to the people who are missing and those who died

in the 9/1/1 World Trade Center attacks

  • @carambola08 If you are so moved, you do it! Artists write to what moves them. Gorecki wrote to the Holocaust and Hungarian war. Do not label everything propaganda. It isn't.
