My favorite scene from "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" directed by Peter Jackson (beautiful music by Howard Shore - "Evenstar").
~~~~~~
"But Arwen went forth from the House, and the light of her eyes was quenched, and it seemed to her people that she had become cold and grey as nightfall in winter that comes without a star. Then she said farewell to Eldarion, and to her daughters, and to all whom she had loved; and she went out from the city of Minas Tirith and passed away to the land of Lórien, and dwelt there alone under the fading trees until winter came. Galadriel had passed away and Celeborn had also gone, and the land was silent."
(Appendices of "The Lord of the Rings" by J. R. R. Tolkien)
  • this scene should have won an oscar alone...
  • A sacrifice that none of us can comprehend. To give up eternal life...... for pure love is just immense. I'd do it for my daughter, Arwen did it for Aragorn............. and I think that it shows a beautiful part of the human spirit.
    We're so quick to criticise ourselves...... but sometimes we should try to remember some good things about ourselves.
  • she is mortal now, elronds is only half elf, but he got to choose if he wanted to be eldar(elves) or Adain (Men).... but his brother chose to be from the line of Men and aragon is a decendant of this line which was called the numenorian kings (dunedine) so when she chose to be mortal, and get married to aragon, she is loosing her immortality, but now that she is joined in with the numenorian kings she still has a very long life, longer then her kids will have, because she was once a eldar (elf).
  • Am I the only one who finds Elrond to be attractive in a regal, elegant way? I love his voice, its so powerful yet strangely soothing even as he forsees how his daughter will die of a grief-stricken heart.
  • @hattlort ooh i see. thanks for the info :D
  • @killer92173 He WILL play Elrond in the Hobbit! :D Hurraay!
  • Interesting. Elrond lied by omission. He tells Arwen that she will be in despair when her husband dies. Yet, she sees more hope than Elrond was willing to share. I guess he was desperate to prevent being seperated from her until the End. When an Elf dies, they may go to Valinor. But Humans are not so lucky. We wait a time in the Halls of Mandos and then disappear from Arda altogether. In marrying a Human, Arwen will share the fate of her beloved.
  • how come she lives forever even though she isnt full elf. from what i remember elrond is only half-elf
  • @XfuckyouX24 Because Aragorn died of old age before her, basically. In more detail, he 'felt' the end coming and decided to accept death, instead of fighting against it andholding on until he was witless.
    Her children outlived her; her son Eldarion became King and Tolkien doesn't write about what happens to her daughters, but it can be assumed they have happy lives too. They were all adults by the time Aragorn died, it wasn't like she was abandoning them.
    Hope I was helpful!
  • @DragonNinjaYuffie But what about her children? And how could she of outlived him if she gave up her immortality? Tell me more please :D
