April 28, 2009. Springtails (Order Collembola) are primitive little wingless insects. They are abundant on a moss-covered low brick wall in an urban area of Columbus, Ohio, USA where they are evident during and shortly after rain showers during warmer times of the year. The moss is Tortula papillosa (family Pottiaceae). Note the moss has asexual reproductive structures (gemmae).
